Pergolas

A pergola can be a good addition to any backyard and can be placed virtually anywhere. A popular design choice is to have a pergola that meets the house itself and extends over the rear patio, providing some shade while still allowing some sunlight in. These are great additions for homes in sunny environments, such as our region here in Southern California. Like the photo depicted, we've also seen different types of walls and borders to encase the area under the pergola, to give a more intimate atmosphere and the feeling of a somewhat closed off space. If the sunlight is unwanted, having a solid roof is also an option, as well as adding some curtains to open up or enclose the space can be a nice touch. 

Gazebos

Much like a pergola, except a gazebo is more often than not fitted with a solid roof, has a rounder shape, and is almost always a standalone structure. Gazebos often make good spaces for private conversations, intimate dining, reading books, and working remotely. When incorporated in a landscape, it can serve as a center piece as well as a private place to retreat to farther away from a main entertainment area. As mentioned with pergolas, gazebos can also be fitted with lights and curtains to illuminate it at night and close it off from the elements, providing you the option to use it in nearly any weather condition.

Decks

There are many ways to position and style a deck. Popular choices include a wood deck in place of a concrete patio, or overhanging areas of lower elevation, like a body of water or the side of a hill. On the other hand, it's completely possible to come up with an artistically unique design as depicted in the photo on the left, where a modern, almost digital looking deck overhangs the pool.
